During the recent State of the Union Address, the President emphasized fiscal responsibility and a need to focus on innovation to protect America’s future. This is not a new direction for the government policy, which has been focusing on maximizing returns on innovation for some time. In March of 2010, the Office of Science and Technology reached out to universities to discuss “transferring viable research discoveries to the marketplace” and “increase the economic impact of Federal investment in university R&D”. It is a “help me, help you” circumstance, and a great example of a symbiotic relationship that helps consumers, the universities and America in general.
